I find my inspiration to paint while hiking in nature. My work environment fills with sounds of birds, flowing water, smells of grass and trees and the touch of wind on my skin. Mind, body and nature are interconnected and alive. I am concerned with the play of light, color and perspective that is indicative of the energy and flow of life. When creating my work, I am concerned with paint consistency. I splash watery layers of broad stokes of color, quickly moving the paint across the canvas. I begin with sketching the general idea and move into specifics. I focus on close inspection of nature and play with depth and perspective. In recent works, I combine nature with imagery symbolic of the self.
Artists of influence: Ansel Keifer, Edward Hopper, Diebenkorn, Michael Mazur, Georgia O’Keefe, Anselm Adams and Jerry Uelsman.
My inspiration not only comes from nature but from philosophy, travel and dance.
